The Fishing Cabin compound consisted of two structures, one with two apartments, on the west shore of Donner Lake near Truckee. Multiple kitchens and an overall lack of charm set this interior design project up for an extreme makeover. The client’s clear intention was for a house that was decidedly rustic without being dated. The cabin-like feel — dark and moody in places and detailed with lots of wood, interior chinking, wide-board flooring and time-tested rustic furniture — is offset with contemporary touches, such as metal panelling detailed with rivets at the top of the stair and tiles in bold geometric patterns in the kitchens.
Interior design included Buffalo plaids, custom leather furniture, an applied twig mirror, dashes of red in upholstery and Native American rugs warm the spaces. Bold red custom cabinetry, a bunkroom with heavy hand-hewn beams and a stacked stone wall, a corner featuring a wood-burning stove in red enamel and a whimsical tiled bathroom floor all help give the compound a multi-generational feel.
